Calgary 2012 - Celebrate Calgary being a Cultural Capital of Canada!

Are you a Rastagarian?

Calgary ReggaeFest lasts only a few days. Being Rastagarian can last a lifetime.

By its simplest definition, a Rastagarian is a Calgarian who shares the values of Caribbean culture and, specifically, Reggae music.

It's not a religious movement, it's not social commentary, and it's not scary. Rastagarians are the youthful Calgarians of all ages, shapes, sizes and colours who celebrate our city's cultural, social and aesthetic revitalization.

So when you're asked "Are you a Rastagarian?" say "Yes!" It's an invitation to ReggaeFest. Moreover, it's an invitation to participate in the things that help make Calgary a more progressive, culturally rich experience. No strings attached - just food, fun, great music and new experiences.

REGGAEFEST 2011 - August 18 - 20, 2011
Calgary, Alberta, Canada

ReggaeFest 2011 is HERE! - Week at a Glance.

CALGARY, ALBERTA…August 16, 2011…Rastagarians are getting ready for the Big Ship to dock in Calgary at Shaw Millennium Park on Saturday, August 20, for REGGAEFEST 2011.

"The last time I was in Calgary was over 20 years ago with Dennis Brown and I just cannot wait to be back with a new generation of Reggae artistes" says the Big Ship captain Freddie McGregor.

If there are royal families in Reggae, then the McGregor's would only be second to the Marley's for the throne.

"Think about it, the legendary Freddie McGregor has remained consistent as a performer, his son Stephen is the top producer in the Jamaica, son Chino just released a very highly acclaimed debut album and daughter Shema is building a name for herself. When you say Big Ship all ears perk up and eyes open wide" says a very excited Leo Cripps, ReggaeFest producer.

For REGGAEFEST 2011 the Grammy nominated Freddie McGregor and the Big Ship family sail into Calgary with the past, present and future directions of Reggae music including Reggae songbird Nadine Sutherland and Big Ship protégé Laden and this has had every Reggae lover in and around the city excited.

"It's just incredible to see how many of our online ticket purchases are from the 780 and 250 area codes" says the festival's Executive Director Cindy Nield. "This really shows that REGGAEFEST truly belongs to all the people of Western Canada."

The stellar line up of performers for REGGAEFEST 2011 Mainstage Event at Shaw Millennium Park includes New Kingston, Rebel Emergency, Lenn Hammond, Fenom and more.

Pre REGGAEFEST events start on Wednesday, August 17 at the Ship & Anchor Pub (534 – 17 Avenue SW) with the REGGAEFEST 2011 Kick-off and Project ROAR fundraiser featuring Maximum Force and New Kingston performing.

Thursday, August 18 has two events. Reggae Downtown at noon featuring Kae Sun and Natural Flavas and the Canadian Reggae Music Showcase featuring Souljah Fyah, Kae Sun, Natural Flavas and Rebel Emergency in the evening at The Republik (219 - 17 Avenue SW). The show starts at 9:00 pm and the $10 suggested donation will benefit Project ROAR.

Come out and support live Canadian Reggae Music as both events feature only Canadian performers.

On Friday, August 19 join REGGAEFEST at Cantos Music Foundation (134 – 11 Avenue SE) from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm for an interactive workshop on the topic – What have we learned from Reggae music! This is a free event.

Remember it's not every day you get to Reggae and Calgary REGGAEFEST isn't just for Reggae fans. It's an event that transcends all racial, cultural and musical boundaries. REGGAEFEST 2011 will deliver over 12 hours of non-stop family friendly Reggae entertainment. Activities throughout the mainstage event will include a fun and interactive youth area, food and merchandise vendors and the Big Rock Beer Garden.
